A Peaceful Awakening
The day began with the serene sounds of birds chirping and the fresh morning air of Habarana’s lush forest. As the sun’s rays filtered into my room, I was greeted by the sight of towering trees, a cozy wooden bench, and a stretch of green grass perfect for yoga. The morning held a surprise—a real iguana near the gate, its crocodile-like appearance intriguing but harmless.
Exploring the Wild Hut Habarana
Stepping outside, I marveled at the Wild Hut’s tranquil surroundings. Lemon plants, coconut and banana trees, and a variety of other flora created a serene atmosphere. The host’s arrival signaled the start of a special moment—a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast under the trees. The meal was a much-needed change after days of toast and salad, with coconut roti, bananas, and coconut pancakes that nourished both body and soul.
On the Road to Sigiriya
After packing up, I thanked the host and opted for a walk to the main market, bypassing the tuk-tuk offer. Along the way, I indulged in the tangy taste of local tamarind, its flavor lingering in my thoughts, and sipped on refreshing coconut water. The journey continued with a bus ride through the Sigiriya forest, where a majestic elephant appeared, adding a touch of wonder to the trip.
Arrival and Adventure in Sigiriya
Upon arriving in Sigiriya, I walked another 2 km, pausing for tea and hoppers before continuing to Kolon Resort. The resort, though modest, offered a refreshing pool where I quickly took a dip. The evening included a stroll to the local market, where I enjoyed more tea and hoppers and picked up some fresh fruits. Dinner was a delightful Sri Lankan spread of four vegetables, papad, and a generous serving of rice, rounding off the day with flavors that resonated with the warmth of the people and the beauty of the place.
Stay tuned for the next chapter, where I’ll delve into the village life around Sigiriya.
